New Rides, New Deals - July 2025
July 2025
Let’s be honest - I’ve got a soft spot for Audi. Always have. They manage to blend understated power with a badge that still earns a second glance at the lights. But it goes deeper than that. Audi to me is harassing Italy's Stelvio Pass in the baby-V8, AWD RS4s of decades past; it's a fond reminder of picking up an underpowered 2.0L diesel A4 Tourer from Frankfurt International and blasting down the autobahn, happily behind the wheel of this subtly-opulent, dark cabin - topping out around 215km/h en route to the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart.
So, when the new Audi Q6 e-tron landed last month, it hit a nerve. Built on the same bones as the Porsche Macan Electric, it brings German engineering with that signature Audi class. This is the kind of EV that could help close the badge gap - when Aussie drivers no longer see electric as “alternative”, just aspirational.
Now, on to the real showstopper: the Volkswagen ID. Buzz GTX. It’s retro, rebellious, and somehow still modern. Dual-motor, AWD, and a design that screams fun without trying too hard. It’s not just a people mover – it’s a people magnet. If zuup had a company carpool van, this’d be it. #instantclassic
Also hitting the market this month were the IM Motors IM5 and IM6 - a new Chinese EV brand from the same folks behind MG. These are smooth-looking units, no doubt. And with a driveaway price of $60,990, they’re punching well below the belt of most rivals. But here’s the weird bit: both the IM5 (sedan) and IM6 (SUV) are priced the same. Someone forgot to tell them Aussies will happily fork out more for an SUV - height, space, confidence, all that good stuff - making the SUV a, relatively speaking, good deal. Still, at that price point, these could be sleepers. Let’s see if buyers warm up to the badge.
And let’s not forget what we promised last month - to take stock of the first-half trends. The quick recap?
- Over 72,800 EVs sold so far this year (BEV + PHEV)
- That’s 11.7% of the new car market - up from 9.6% in 2024
- June 2025 delivered a record-breaking month, with nearly 16% of all cars sold being electric
That’s serious momentuml. So too are the headaches around supply, charging access, and aftersales (looking at you, BYD), but the direction is clear.

We’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for how these new models land - especially whether the ID. Buzz finds its cult following, and whether IM can carve out a slice of the SUV pie. Either way, it’s shaping up to be a very juicy second half of the year.
