What is an RFID Card? Meet zuup Pass

One of the simplest tools you can keep in your wallet or glovebox for a smooth charge is the zuup Pass.

If you’ve been wondering what it is and how it works alongside the zuup Roam app, here’s the breakdown.

What exactly is an RFID card?

RFID stands for Radio-Frequency Identification.

In simple terms, it’s a card that lets you start a charging session at a public charger with a quick tap - no phone required.

While the zuup Roam app helps you find chargers and manage your sessions, the zuup Pass is built for those moments where you just want to tap and get on with it. No messing around.

The zuup Pass - simple, reliable, ready to go

  • Securely linked to you: Each zuup Pass is connected to your account via a unique chip identifier, so every session is recognised and billed correctly
  • Tap and go: Plug in, tap your card, and your session starts
  • Built as a backup: It’s there when you need it - flat phone, no signal, or just a quicker way to get going

One card. Multiple networks.

The zuup Pass is designed to keep things simple - not add more cards to your wallet.

Because it uses a standard RFID identifier (UID), it can also be registered with other compatible EV charging apps.

  • Use one card across apps: Add your zuup Pass to other EV charging networks that support RFID - charging sessions are still billed by the app or network you’re using at the time
  • Less clutter: No need to carry multiple cards for different providers
  • Works with major networks: Compatible with networks like Chargefox, Exploren, bp pulse, AGL, EVX and Wevolt

Why it’s a smart backup to have

The zuup Pass isn’t here to replace the app - it’s there to make sure you’re never stuck.

  • Works when your phone doesn’t: No signal, flat battery, or patchy reception - just tap and go
  • No friction: Skip the loading screens and logins. Plug in, tap, done
  • Across supported networks: Use it anywhere zuup Roam is enabled - no app switching required

How secure is the zuup Pass?

Not all RFID cards are created equal.

The zuup Pass is built using MIFARE DESFire EV1 (2K) - a higher-security chip commonly used in transport systems and secure access cards.

Many basic RFID cards in the market use older, lower-security chips that rely on static identifiers and can be more easily copied. The zuup Pass is designed to go well beyond that.

  • Account-linked security: Your card doesn’t store payment details - it acts as a secure key linked to your zuup account
  • Advanced chip technology (DESFire EV1): Supports encrypted communication and secure memory, making it significantly harder to clone or tamper with
  • Real-time validation: Every tap is verified through the zuup platform before a session starts
  • Reduced cloning risk: Designed to support secure authentication methods rather than relying solely on basic identifiers
  • Full control: If your card is lost, you can disable it instantly in the app (refer to illustration below)

How to start a charge in three simple steps

Charging your EV should be easy. With the zuup Pass, it is:

  1. Find a charger: Use zuup Roam to locate a compatible charge point
  2. Plug in: Connect your vehicle
  3. Tap to start: Tap your zuup Pass on the reader and you’re off
  4. Monitor: Your charge session will still pop up in app so you can track your charge session

The bottom line

The zuup Roam app does the heavy lifting - helping you find, charge and pay across networks.

The zuup Pass? It’s your no-fuss backup. Simple, reliable, and ready when you need it.
